Maintaining the health and wellbeing of your puppy is extremely important and a crucial part of this involves routine vaccinations and deworming. These preventive measures protect your puppy from common parasites and infectious diseases, ensuring they grow into healthy adult dogs.
Routine deworming is essential to keep your puppy free from internal parasites. As puppies administer deworming every two weeks starting from when they are two weeks old. The schedule is as follows: deworming at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks old using Drontal puppy suspension.
This preventive measure ensures that our puppies stay healthy and free from parasites. As a general guideline, all puppies should continue receiving deworming every two weeks until they reach three months of age. Subsequently, they should be dewormed monthly until they reach six months, at which point they transition to an adult worming regimen.
We use Drontal Puppy Suspension as our preferred worming medication for our puppies' fortnightly treatment regimen.
We use Drontal Allwormer for our nursing mothers as part of their worming schedule, aligned with the fortnightly treatment regimen for puppies.
Vaccinating your puppy in the initial weeks of coming home is essential. Regular vaccinations not only protect your puppy from infectious diseases but also prevent them from spreading illness to other animals. By staying diligent with vaccinations, you're laying the groundwork for your puppy's lifelong health and wellbeing.
Your puppy will come home with their first vaccine, the C3 vaccine, which protects against parvovirus, canine hepatitis and distemper. They receive this at 6 weeks of age. Here is more information about vaccination regimens.
Traditional Regimen: In the traditional vaccination schedule, puppies receive three initial vaccinations at 6, 12 and 16 weeks. It's important to note that puppies following this regimen remain at risk of contracting diseases until two weeks after their final vaccination, achieving full protection only by week 18. Thereafter, dogs will require annual boosters for all five diseases throughout their lives.
Modern Regimen: The modern vaccination approach involves two initial vaccinations at 6 and 10 weeks of age, with full immunity attained by 11 weeks. Although a full C5 booster is administered at one year, the three primary diseases-Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus-only require boosters every three years thereafter, as opposed to annual boosters in the traditional regimen.
More information on vaccine regimen can be found here.
After completing the initial puppy vaccinations, your dog will require a booster shot. Following this, regular immunisations will be necessary throughout your dog's life to maintain immunity against common canine diseases.
Vaccinations are crucial in protecting your puppy from a variety of serious and potentially fatal diseases. They work by stimulating your puppy's immune system to recognise and combat specific pathogens. Without vaccinations, your puppy is vulnerable to infections that can cause severe illness. By following a proper vaccination schedule, you ensure your puppy's immune system is well-equipped to handle these threats.
By adhering to a regular schedule of deworming and vaccinations, you provide your puppy with the best start in life. Deworming every two weeks until three months of age, then monthly until six months, and finally transitioning to an adult regimen, helps keep your puppy free from parasites. Meanwhile, sticking to the recommended vaccination schedule protects your puppy from a range of infectious diseases.
Staying proactive with these preventative measures not only safeguards your puppy's health but also contributes to the overall well-being of the canine community by preventing the spread of diseases. As a new puppy owner, your diligence in maintaining these routines will ensure your dog grows into a healthy, happy and thriving adult dog.
