We are committed to raising well rounded and resilient puppies. One of the ways we achieve this is from day 3 to day 16 of each puppy's life is Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). This technique involves a series of targeted handling exercises designed to slowly desensitise puppies to small, controlled stimuli, building their resilience to handle stressful situations as they grow older.
ENS, also known as the Bio Sensor program, was originally developed by the Military for their canine program. This method was created to improve the performance of military dogs through early neurological stimulation exercises. These exercises, based on years of research, have been shown to have significant and lasting effects on the neurological development of puppies.
The ENS program involves handling each puppy individually and performing a series of five specific exercises once each day. These exercises include:
Holding the Puppy Upright: The puppy is held gently in a vertical position with its head above its tail.
Holding the Puppy Upside Down: The puppy is held gently in an inverted position with its head pointing down.
Holding the Puppy on its Back: The puppy is placed on its back, supporting its body in a supine position.
Placing the Puppy on a Cold, Damp Cloth: The puppy is placed on a cool, damp surface to stimulate its thermal receptors.
Tickling the Puppy’s Toes with a Cotton Bud: A cotton swab is gently rubbed between the puppy's toes to stimulate its tactile senses.
Five key benefits have been consistently observed in canines exposed to these Bio Sensor stimulation exercises:
Improved Cardiovascular Performance: ENS helps improve heart rate regulation, leading to better cardiovascular health.
Stronger Heartbeats: Puppies subjected to ENS show stronger, more robust heartbeats.
Enhanced Adrenal Gland Function: ENS stimulates the adrenal glands, contributing to better stress management.
Increased Stress Tolerance: ENS exposed puppies develop a higher tolerance for stress, remaining calmer under pressure.
ENS not only affects physical health but also influences behaviour and learning capabilities. In various tests, ENS stimulated puppies have demonstrated superior performance compared to their non-stimulated littermates. Notably, these puppies were more active and exploratory. In simple problem solving tests, such as navigating a maze with detours, ENS puppies were less stressed, made fewer errors, and displayed fewer signs of distress. This contrasted sharply with non stimulated puppies, who were more prone to whining, errors and heightened distress in the same conditions.
The first crucial period for ENS begins on the third day of life and lasts until the sixteenth day. This timeframe is critical due to the rapid neurological growth and development occurring in puppies. The Bio Sensor program, through its targeted stimulation exercises, aims to give puppies a superior neurological advantage during this window. By stimulating the neurological system, these exercises promote the development of neural connections, resulting in puppies that are more resilient, adaptable and better equipped to handle life's challenges.
